Reconstructing the “Silent Soldier”
The Challenge
- The family of a WWI veteran knew only that he served in France. No medals or papers had survived, and the 1973 National Archives fire was believed to have destroyed his records.
The Research Path
- Using my knowledge of "burnt file" reconstruction, I utilized alternate sources: draft registration cards, unit morning reports, and hospital transport manifests. I reconstructed his entire service timeline, from his enlistment in Ohio to his movements through the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
The Result
- The client received a 15-page narrative report and a map of their grandfather’s military journey, finally honoring his "silent" service.
Testimonial
- "We always heard my grandfather served in France, but because of the 1973 records fire, we thought his story was lost forever. Wanda’s research was incredible—she reconstructed his service using records I never even knew existed. Seeing his journey through the Meuse-Argonne offensive mapped out was a deeply moving experience for our whole family. She treated his legacy with the utmost honor."
