Mission Statement
The purpose of the Heritage Seekers is to collect and preserve information pertaining to interesting historical events of the Palmyra area, to assume responsiblility for proper recognition, acquisition, and preservation of historical landmarks, relics, souvenirs, and Missouriana; to do suitable honor to those hardy pioneers of this area who laid the foundation of our present happiness by arranging and promulgating anniversary celebrations and meetings in their memory and to engender rightful pride in the rich history of the Palmyra area.
"For as long as a hundred years after Marquette and Joliet first gazed upon it, the land now called Marion county was occupied by the Northern Indians, the Sacs or Saukees, the Foxes, Iowas, Pottawattamies and the Missouris.
To the latter it belonged naturally, and when the former came in, as they did frequently, they were intruders and trespassers...
The "Old Marion County Jail", built in 1858, included the jailer's quarters and the cell block for the prisoners.
